This spring, Elian König was a colleague at our center in Arusha for several months. From the Amsterdam Medical Center, she completed an internship as a rehabilitation physician in training, with the assignment to investigate how the quality of care at the center can be further improved. By observing and asking targeted questions, she gained a clear picture of the treatment methods and rehabilitation needs.
With a few words of Swahili, Elian was able to easily establish contact and gain the trust of parents and staff. She participated in outreach and mobile clinic services, allowing her to form a broad and realistic view of the daily work. Her findings are currently being compiled into a report, which will be shared with the Sibusiso board in due course.
Elian: “Of course, you shouldn’t look at treatment methods in Tanzania too much through a Western lens, but I found it wonderful to see that my suggestions were immediately adopted by the staff. These are small changes that provide a good feeling. In this way, you can still do your part.”
