Sibusiso Happy with Martha Lukasi as Director

This post is also available in: Dutch German Swahili

Since February 2025, Martha Lukasi has been the new director of Sibusiso. She had already been involved with the center as General Manager Finance and Operations since September 2022. During this period, we have come to know her as a very passionate and committed employee who leads the team well in their work and provides the Directors with the necessary (financial) information. Since January, Martha has obtained her Master’s in Human Resource Management from the Institute of Accountancy in Arusha.

Getting to know Martha is getting to know a woman with humor, passion, and decisiveness. But also with a vision for the future of the center. That’s why we asked her to introduce herself in this newsletter.

Martha says: ‘I was born 45 years ago in the Arusha region, I am married to Solomon, and I am a mother of 4 children. I started my career 20 years ago at Price Waterhouse Coopers (PwC) in Dar es Salaam, where I was responsible for auditing. I feel passionate about contributing to a better life for children.

I am very honored to be appointed as the new executive director of Sibusiso. In this role, I lead the organization in daily operations, strategy, and advocacy for children with disabilities. My work includes securing funding, managing the team, and ensuring that the programs truly make a difference in people’s lives. I am deeply committed to empowerment and inclusivity, and I strive to be part of a movement that not only improves and inspires our children and their parents, but also our dedicated staff.

The Sibusiso team has grown significantly over the past 25 years. Although I haven’t been with Sibusiso for long, I know that this growth has enabled specialization within our team. The tireless efforts have been key to the organization’s success. Nothing compares to the dedication of our staff to understand each child’s needs, create personalized plans, and create a supportive learning environment. The focus on communication, social skills, emotional support, and working with families helps children gain confidence and grow throughout their lives.

The growing demand for help is a challenge

Despite efforts to support children in need, the growing demand remains a challenge. For example, the disability rate on mainland Tanzania has increased from 9.3% to 11.2%, highlighting the increasing need. With the limited resources our organization has, or those of other organizations, we cannot help everyone. Therefore, close collaboration with local communities and the government is essential in implementing important projects. It has become known that the National Strategic Plan for Rehabilitation FY 21-26 states that community services in national and regional hospitals remain very limited. This lack of access is especially challenging for people in rural areas.

I see Sibusiso’s future as promising, with exciting opportunities for growth and the development of a unique and innovative environment that has a meaningful impact. Our commitment to continue supporting children with disabilities on a large scale remains a top priority.

I would also like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and deeply appreciate everyone who has supported this journey. Your contributions have been invaluable and as we move forward, your continued involvement is more important than ever. Together, we can make an even bigger difference.’

Investing in our organization

Sometimes it is necessary to evaluate our own organization as well. For instance, the organization of automation and IT requires attention. For this reason, Gabry Vlot visited Arusha to advise us in this area.

A mobile clinic truck for Sibusiso

Many children with disabilities do not receive the care they need because the center is too far away, there is no transport, or there are no funds. That is why Sibusiso visits villages with a mobile clinic. Join the fundraising campaign for a mobile clinic truck for Sibusiso. By doing so, you help set this essential care in motion!

Sharing knowledge about treatment methods

Rehabilitation physician in training, Elian König, spent two months working alongside the therapists in Arusha. She is researching how the quality of care at the center can be further improved.

The programs

The Outreach Team provides home therapy, advice, assistive devices, and breaks down taboos, ensuring children with disabilities receive more opportunities and acceptance.
In the center, carpenters and physiotherapists custom-make assistive devices such as wheelchairs and chairs, improving children’s therapy and mobility.
Sibusiso shares knowledge through theme days, sports, play and celebrations. Families, care providers and governments learn and celebrate together with the children.
Sibusiso shares 25 years of knowledge through a new knowledge center with training and education to increase understanding and acceptance of children with disabilities.
